Points of Pride at Northwestern
A level playing field
We believe every student deserving of a Northwestern education should be here — no matter the financial circumstances. Our admissions process is need blind and, even in the face of an economic recession, the University has increased its commitment to financial aid. We’ve replaced loans with grants for students in need and capped loans for others — because our graduates should leave with opportunity, not debt.
Purple and green do mix
When we talk about instituting a University-wide shift toward sustainability, we mean business. Among the nation’s universities and colleges, Northwestern is one of the largest purchasers of alternative energy sources. Our commitment also extends to cutting down on campus waste and constructing only energy efficient, LEED-certified buildings. In short, Northwestern is taking action to be part to solution.
We live on the cutting edge
Imagine a drug cocktail that prevents breast cancer from metastasizing. A clinical test for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease that uses bionanotechnology. A nanodiamond that enables safe and efficient gene therapy. Our researchers already have. Whether they’re advances in medicine or technology, investigators at Northwestern continue to turn science fiction into science fact.
Purple looks good on a resume
What impression are potential employers left with when they notice a candidate’s Northwestern degree? Probably the same impression U.S. News & World Report had. The University rose to 12th in the magazine’s “Best Colleges 2009” rankings. As you can see, we’re in some pretty select company. Just like our graduates.
Passion to change the world
Many students desire to make a difference. We provide the tools they need to do just that. At Northwestern Law’s Bluhm Legal Clinic, students gain practical experience and help shape policy on pressing issues both local and international. From the Children and Family Justice Center to the Center on International Human Rights, Northwestern — and our students — make the world a more just place.
Bask in our spotlight
From Warren Beatty to Stephen Colbert, some of the most recognizable faces in the entertainment world are Northwestern alumni. When a theatre department boasts Tony-Award winning faculty, that’s no surprise. With an eclectic array of performances produced by the Theater and Interpretation Center, the annual Waa-Mu music review, and a vibrant student community, this is where the next generation of artists and performers learn to shine.
We think we can dance
Sometimes it’s just not enough to dance the night away. Since 1975, the Northwestern community has shown support for worthy causes in a unique way. How unique? Try 30 hours on the dance floor. Throughout the years, Dance Marathon has raised millions of dollars for charity, proving the only thing more impressive than our students’ moves is their dedication to service.
Victory without shortcuts
The only private institution in the Big Ten conference also maintains some of the most stringent academic standards. And guess what? Northwestern wins. From a football team that’s a perennial bowl contender to a women’s lacrosse program that has built one of college athletics’ most impressive dynasties, the message is clear — these ‘Cats have bite.
Diversity is our priority
Northwestern knows that an open, diverse marketplace of ideas and perspectives is part of what makes a University great. That’s why we’re committed to creating a community of students and faculty truly representative of the community at large. Our need-blind admissions process and the creation of a new named professorship in honor of noted alumnus Harold Washington are just two examples of this important ongoing effort.
One cool backyard
While Northwestern’s campus exudes all the beauty and charm the Midwest has to offer, we’re also on the doorstep of one of America’s most stimulating and significant cities. Chicago’s unique cultural treasures are just minutes away, as our students can enrich their college experience with a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum — or even Wrigley Field.
It’s easy to stay connected
Interested in catching up with old friends? Networking? Making a difference in your community? From the excitement of reunion and homecoming weekend, to countless career development events, to alumni clubs scattered across the country, to on-line social networking, our alumni community makes getting active as easy as wearing your purple best.
NASA likes our faculty
You’ll have to forgive Feinberg School of Medicine Assistant Professor Bobby Satcher if he’s been on leave for a while. After all, it’s tough to hold office hours from the International Space Station. Not to worry: Our faculty who’ve remained on Earth are pretty stellar in their own right. All Northwestern classes are taught by our professors; a group that includes Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and MacArthur Fellowship recipients.
We’re here to serve
With a long tradition of involvement in philanthropic events such as Dance Marathon and Make a Difference Day, Northwestern students clearly desire to better their community and their world. And the University has made it easier for them to do just that. Through the new Center for Civic Engagement, students learn how to weave volunteer service into their academic curricula. Our students supply the passion — we’re happy to point the way.
