The Walter P. Murphy Society at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science

Named in honor of Walter P. Murphy, a leading Chicago industrialist in the 1930s who provided the support that helped start a school of engineering at Northwestern, the Murphy Society recognizes generous annual contributors to the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Members make annual gifts of $1,000 or more (including employer matching gifts), enabling the McCormick School to better prepare engineering students for their critical role in the 21st century.

Murphy Society members earn the exclusive opportunity to assist the dean in making decisions about funding for faculty- and student-initiated projects. The Murphy Society Selection Process places value on the idea that innovation occurs through the shared ideas of many individuals, ultimately leading to future findings and successes in various engineering fields.

How The Murphy Selection Process Works
1. McCormick faculty members and student groups submit proposals for original projects that improve the undergraduate experience in the upcoming academic year.
2. Each fall, Murphy members review the proposals and have two opportunities to provide feedback:
  • Via an exclusive online ballot and/or
  • By joining the dean at one of two events (Evanston and the San Francisco area)
3. Murphy members are informed of final funding decisions and updated on the progress of select projects.

Members also receive the benefit of joining the Northwestern University Leadership Circle, a University-wide giving society.
