January is a time to reflect on the year behind us and plan for the year ahead.
At Northwestern, 2017 brought many highlights: The University awarded nearly 600 grants to undergraduates for summer research and internships, making transformative experiences accessible to more students. Four Northwestern faculty members won Guggenheim Fellowships, showcasing our leadership in the arts, anthropology, and medicine. Two new initiatives—an undergraduate major in global health studies and creation of the Global Poverty Research Lab—give us the potential for international impact.
The generosity of loyal donors in 2017 was also remarkable. During #CATSGiveBack, the University’s annual celebration of #GivingTuesday, 1,200 NU Loyal members supported Northwestern with a gift. During December, hundreds more made gifts to the University—and I know more still will renew their memberships in the coming weeks and months.
Of course, the University’s commitment to excellence is also a promise for constant improvement, which is why the new year is especially meaningful. Annual gifts from alumni, parents, and friends—specifically, those from thousands of NU Loyal members—enable Northwestern to continue to invest in new programs and explore new ideas.
As 2018 begins, we celebrate the strength of NU Loyal and our lasting impact on the University. Northwestern’s achievements depend on a dedicated community of donors, and I am proud to be part of that community with you.
Thank you for your commitment to Northwestern and membership in NU Loyal. With your continued support, the University will reach even greater heights this year.
With appreciation,

Charles L. Katzenmeyer ’85, ’89 MBA
Chair, NU Loyal
