All of her life, MaryAnn Marsh ’85 heard story after story about Northwestern. After all, the University wasn’t just where her father, Christopher Ihejirika, studied finance—it also played a very important role in how MaryAnn and her family were able to move from Nigeria to Chicago.

Christopher had been studying abroad in the United States when war broke out in the region of Nigeria where his family lived in 1967. Since he could not return home, he decided to accept a scholarship at Northwestern. It was while he was at Northwestern’s School of Business (now Kellogg School of Management), that the community banded together and helped bring his family to Chicago where they were reunited.

With a life story as incredible as hers, MaryAnn realizes the importance of giving back to the institution that made such an impact on her family. In addition to being the newly-minted president of the Northwestern University Black Alumni Association (NUBAA), she’s also a gold-level member of NU Loyal with 11 consecutive years of giving and a former co-chair of the Northwestern University Leadership Circle (NULC) Chicago Regional Board.
