Spring 2023 NULC Newsletter
Published May 30, 2023
It is hard to believe that nearly a full academic year has passed since I became president of Northwestern University. It feels like just yesterday that I was preparing to move to Evanston, and now I am getting ready to celebrate commencement and my official inauguration as Northwestern’s 17th president. This has been an incredible experience, and I am delighted to belong to this community.
My initial months here were spent meeting with as many people as possible across our campuses. It was important to me to learn from those who make this university such a special place. I am consistently impressed by the amazing talents of our students, the expertise and ambition of our faculty, the broad impact of our research, and the deep commitment of our staff and administrators at all levels. I also have enjoyed the opportunities to meet many of our wonderful alumni, parents, and donors, both in the Chicago area and during my recent visits to California and New York. I look forward to meeting some of our international alumni during my trip to London in June and connecting with more of you during my travels in the coming year.
One common denominator I have observed within our community is that we are dedicated to making this exceptional university even better. That commitment includes fostering a welcoming environment for students from all backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences to thrive, and ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent the best and brightest students from receiving a Northwestern education. When it comes to teaching and research, we have some absolute gems across our world-class schools and departments. There also are many gems in the making, and these are programs that have tremendous potential to grow to even greater excellence.
I am so grateful for the support of our Northwestern University Leadership Circle (NULC) members, whose generosity helps to make this progress possible. In this issue of Inside the Circle, you will meet NULC member Matt Carter ’83 (’22 P), who traces his success as a Silicon Valley executive back to a particular Northwestern faculty member who encouraged him to take chances. You also will learn about a fascinating new addition to the University Archives, the papers of American film and television icon Garry Marshall ’56 (’86, ’90, ’91 P) (’18, ’25 GP).
I am proud to be a part of this distinguished institution and to count myself as a member of the Leadership Circle. Thank you for all that you do in supporting our university and helping Northwestern continue to shine.
Best regards,
Michael H. Schill, President

Professor of Finance & Real Estate
