Northwestern researchers have discovered that there are a total of just four personality types, according to a recently published Northwestern magazine article called “What’s Your Type?”.

More than 1.5 million people around the world contributed to the results of the study that found most people fall into the following four personality clusters: average, reserved, self-centered, and role model. These are also based on five common personality traits: neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.

The study was conducted by William Revelle, professor of psychology, along with his colleagues Luís Amaral of the McCormick School of Engineering; Martin Gerlach, a postdoctoral fellow in Amaral’s lab; and Beatrice Farb, a summer intern at the time.

Thanks to the generous support of NU Loyal members, important research like this is sustained and continues in the future.

If you’d like to participate in the research and find out what out what your type is, you can do so by taking the test.
