In fall 2022, Northwestern Opera Theater presented the Midwest premiere of an original opera, Christopher Cerrone and Stephanie Fleischmann’s In a Grove. Through this behind-the-scenes footage of the rehearsal process, explore how Bienen School of Music students and faculty collaborated with Cerrone to bring the piece to life.
In 1921, an aspiring botanist goes missing in the Oregon mountains. Her new husband, a schoolteacher, appears to have been murdered. Based on a short story by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, In a Grove follows seven witnesses—some of them suspects—who provide testimony about events that transpired in the mountain grove’s ghost forest. But all is not as it seems, and each new revelation in this suspenseful tale draws the audience deeper into an examination of the subjective nature of truth and the human experience.
